A revolution is knocking on Finland’s door with the country’s gambling monopoly Veikkaus said to be contemplating changes that could have a huge impact to the entire gambling market in this European country.
Veikkaus announced last week that it plans to introduce identity verification for all players who intend to use a slot game terminal.
The move comes months after the Finnish government first set up a working group to come up with ways and methods to help the country update its personal ID number system. The current system used in Finland was first introduced in 1963 and the government was looking for a way to change it as result of recent development of undocumented residents living in the country.
Finland also announced adding biometric aspects to IDs – such as fingerprints – to help lifting the identification process up a notch.
Latching on to the overall idea, the country’s government-run gambling operator explains that slot machine players will also have to prove their identity before using a gaming terminal, which could potentially be of effect on over 18,000 slot machines located across gas stations, supermarkets and other non-casino facilities.
Veikkaus explains that the new identification verification system will first be applied to older slot machines whereas it will slowly get incorporated within the new technology and machines that will be introduced to replace the ageing ones.
The changes are not expected to gain full swing until 2023 and it is still unknown just how Finnish players will be required to verify their identity.
The newly-announced changes have come across a mixed reception in the public although local gambling authorities do believe this system could become an effective way to tackle compulsive and problem gambling.
