With Switzerland’s new gambling legislation is coming into force in January 2019, Swiss Casinos, a major land-based casino operator in the country, has taken steps to forge a partnership with Playtech, gaming technology and service provider based in the Isle of Man.

New Legislation Coming Up!

The Swiss Federal Council, the executive branch of the country’s government, has agreed to enact the country’s new gambling law from 1 January 2019 and only the land-based casino operators in the country will be eligible for the license to run iGaming facility through their online channel.

Operators had a six-month-long period to extend their existing licenses to cover online gaming and all unlicensed gaming sites will be blocked no later than July 2019.

The licensing window closes at the end of 2018 and the licenses will be granted by autumn 2019. The new law will also allow small-scale poker tournaments held outside of casinos with a maximum buy-in of CHF200 ($176) and prize pools of CHF20,000 ($17,600). Maximum prizes for lotteries and raffles have been doubled to CHF 50,000 and CHF500,000 respectively.

With the Swiss market hosting iGaming for the first time in January, Swiss Casinos has now struck a deal with Playetch to power its online offering.

“We are extremely excited to have found an internationally experienced and innovative partner in Playtech,” Swiss Casinos Group chief executive Marc Baumann said. “We will now be able to offer our customers in Switzerland an attractive iGaming offering.”

Playtech chief operating officer Shimon Akad added that his company was pleased to have partnered Switzerland’s leading casino brand. Swiss Casinos owns casinos in Pfäffikon, Schaffhausen, St Gallen and Zürich and is in the process of obtaining its license by the Swiss Federal Gaming Board.

“Playtech has a long history of success in cooperation with leading brands in the world’s most important gambling markets, and we are looking forward to a long and successful partnership with Swiss Casinos,” Baumann added.
