And it is unlike anything you have seen before. It is an action-packed cocktail spread on 3 orbital reels that spin like 3 separate rings. Avatars: Gateway Guardians boast only a couple of special features. The symbols rotate in the three circles to produce either wins or Free Spins. This is an Yggdrasil title through and through. The choice of the theme that the game represents is uniquely representative of Yggdrasil Gaming, as is the design. The backdrop depicts a desolate, mysterious, and ominous place somewhere deep in space. Before we started playing, we thought this might be a play on one of Marvel’s movies, but no. The game revolves around fictional guardians of the gateway on a far-away planet. Details are excellent, especially when it comes to the icons. Speaking of symbols, you will stumble upon 8 different icons in the game. Four low-value icons are only dots with light. The high-value items are a group of four guardians – a purple, green, blue, and reddish one. The red one is worth the most – it can yield 40x your stake – but is the most elusive one.

The reel setup is not the standard one found in other slots. Yggdrasil, wanting to showcase something unique, devised a circular grid that functions as three separate rings. Each ring is divided into six parts, and your primary goal is to land a winning line of matching symbols on all three rings. The three rings represent three reels, while the six segments represent rows. In the base game, you play with 3×6 setup, while Free Spins bring more fun with the 3×8 setup.

  • Free Spins: To get into the Free Spins feature, you will need to collect three Free Spins symbols across three rings. They do not need to be in one line, though. They only need to be located on the grid at the same time. You can get from 2 to 8 Free Spins, and the number is determined by the position on the Hot Spot. Of course, if all three symbols are found in one single line that happens to be a Hot Spot, you get 8 Spins with several Hot Spots throughout extra rounds. That also means more Multipliers!

Yggdrasil put a lot of effort into creating this game. From the design to the technicalities behind the game, it is a great title. If you like fantasy games that are set in the future, Avatars: Gateway Guardians is a must-play.

Of course, one needs to pay attention to the volatility. It is high, and although the RTP is decent (96.3%), you will have to be very patient if you want to win. Payouts happen very rarely, so long dry spells are not infrequent.

Nevertheless, as soon as the free spins start rolling, all will be forgotten. The game is very engaging, especially in the beginning when you first encounter the unusual reel setup.
