The Halloween season typically produces an array of unique games, but Play’n GO decided to go a different route in 2024: with Haitian Vodou Iwa. If you are familiar with Yggdrasil’s Baron Samedi, you might know what we’re talking about. Baron Saturday, or Baron: Lord of Saturday, is one of the Iwa of Haitian Vodou, and the star of the new Play’n GO game. Hence, we’re looking at a voodoo-themed slot with 5×4 reels and 20 paylines drenched in mystique, the occult, and undead.
Story-wise, we have a playful-yet-dark slot set on a nearby graveyard. It’s a holiday season, so there’s a festive spirit all around. Features in the game follow the festive vibe to a T, with Wilds that can stretch to cover entire reels, as well as Multipliers decorating the Free Spins round. This might sound like a very regular feature set, but the way everything plays out is quite fun. So, you’re bound to like the game, because even at its darkest, it’s still pretty light and playful.
As we mentioned, there’s a 5×4 grid with 20 paylines. Variance is high, so don’t expect miracles. The RTP is the standard rate of 96.20%. Lastly, the highest win you may hit on the grid equals 3,500x the stake. Interestingly, it’s not the only mystic slot that Play’n GO released in the fall of 2024, as there’s also Lady of Fortune Remastered, a remaster of the famous 2014 Lady of Fortune slot. Check that one out if you enjoy quirky games transcending reality.
SHOW MORESHOW MORESHOW LESSWe love Halloween slots, we really do. Play’n GO knows that, and it seems they’ve figured out a way to circumvent the old and overused themes by instead focusing on other forms of spiritualism. Enter, Baron: Lord of Saturday.
Baron of Saturday, or Baron Samedi, is a Haitian Vodou Iwa. Plainly, he’s the father of the dead, but he’s so much more than that that we cannot simply do him justice in a couple of sentences.
Either way, Baron Samedi is such an interesting concept that it’s frequently used in online slots, most notably Baron Samedi by Yggdrasil.
In the Play’n GO iteration that came out in 2024, Baron Samedi appears as the highest-paying icon in the set, paying up to 8x for 5 OAK. Besides him, you’ll also notice a female character, a voodoo doll, cigars, a hat with a skull, and four low-rank card suits painted on tiny bottles of potion (or some other concoction). The low-rank icons pay from 1.60x to 2x for 5 OAK.
Now, the game features a very standard technical frame. There are 5 reels, 4 rows, and 20 possible paylines. it’s a highly volatile slot with a 96.20% RTP, so that’s all very run-of-the-mill. Ultimately, you can win up to 3,500x the stake. And as expected, there’s no Buy Bonus in here, just plain old Scatters that unlock Free Spins, Multipliers, and Wilds. Interestingly, the bets go from $0.05 to $100, which gives you lots of room for tinkering with wagers.
The features in the game include Wilds that can cover entire reels, Multipliers, and Free Spins.
Wilds are classic skull icons that may replace any type of icon on the grid to generate a winning combo. They land only on the three central reels. On any random spin, you might trigger random wilds, and then get 3-6 Wilds on the grid. Additionally, the three central reels might also trigger the Wild Reel effect. This means that the entire reel might be covered in an Expanded Wild.
When a Wild Reel effect is activated, any Wild that lands on said reel transforms into a Wild Reel. In the base game, this happens only once per spin (only one Wild Reel per spin possible). In Free Spins, you might get up to 3 simultaneously.
Multipliers appear solely in Free Spins. They come with Wilds, so they are Wild Multipliers. They are there throughout the feature, and the round begins with a 2x Multiplier. The highest possible value is 10x, but you might collect more than one Multiplier in the end.
Scatters land only on Reels 1 and 5. Two unlock Free Spins: get 2 and you win 8 Spins with a 2x Multiplier. Moreover, as the round progresses, you collect extra Scatters too, which gives you a boost in spins and Multipliers.
Four Scatters unlock +3 Spins and a Multiplier from 2x to 3x, then 5x to 10x. You can see the meter beside the grid and track your progress there. You can add up to 9 more spins.
The year 2024 is ripe with Halloween games, some spookier than others. Interestingly, they are all playful in tone, with some going dark but most keeping it casual – BTG’s Boo, this one, and Lady of Fortune Remastered.
The thing that surprised us the most with Baron: Lord of Saturday is not the tone, but the slimmed down feature selection. There’s only the classic set, Wilds (covering entire reels), Multipliers, and Free Spins. In a shocking turn of events, we liked this, it didn’t look boring or repetitive. It’s a decently packed game, with the theme standing out as the centerpiece of the game, while features play a supporting role. A good game in our books, for sure.
