UKGC Implements New Age and Identity Verification Rules
From the 7th day of May 2019 on, some significant changes in the rules of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) will be implemented and will come into force. The reputable regulatory body recently announced a profusely interesting new business plan to revitalise the iGaming industry. These new alterations come in accordance with the fresh strategy.
Key Changes
Having commenced yesterday, renewed regulations LCCP (Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice) will be applied in certain processes of online gambling operators. Namely, after an open consultation organised by the Commission, the new legislation will focus on ensuring that online casinos verify all age and identity details of their clients “quickly and robustly”. The alterations will have an impact on remote betting and gaming operators, as well as some remote lotteries.
According to the official announcement issued by the UKGC, they will encompass:
- New licence condition 17 which sets out minimum requirements for identity verification
- Changes to Social Responsibility Code Provision 3.2.11 for age verification for remote betting and gaming
- Changes to Social Responsibility Code Provision 3.2.13 for age verification for some remote lotteries.
No Verification = No Gambling
In other words, all UKGC-licensed online gaming venues will from now on have to check all personal information of all clients, including their full name, address of residence, and date of birth. Without this verification, no customer will be allowed to gamble online at said online casino.
Importantly, operators cannot confiscate a client’s funds based on their not having provided ID in time for 7th May 2019. As per last year’s action by the Competitions and Markets Authority, every player is entitled to the means which they have wagered onto their accounts, the winnings made with the funds they have wagered, as well as the winnings earned through a bonus, provided they have met any relevant wagering or other requirements.
